When I was in my 20s, I was a stay at home mom. I enjoyed reading, crafting, cross stitching, and crocheting doilies. My mom taught me how to make doilies and I could follow fairly intricate patterns. But, I never learned how to make anything else. I'm now in my 50s and teaching myself to knit. I happened to find a pretty scarf pattern that required crocheting. Unfortunately, I can't follow the pattern. I even found my mom's original crochet book from the 1950s & it isn't much help. So, off to Amazon I went to find a quality book on crochet. I looked at several books & read reviews on each. I settled on this book. I think every person who enjoys crochet would find this book helpful. The stitches and techniques are explained extremely well. I learn best visually. So, having a book that illustrates the stitches and how they should look in swatches is perfect for me. Suddenly, my scarf pattern now looks like something I can follow. I am thrilled. I expect to be able to markedly expand my crochet skills with the help of this book. I look forward to making scarves, afghans, hats, sweaters, and whatever else I decide to make with the assistance of this book. You Tube is great if you want to see a video on a stitch. But, I prefer a book at hand for a quick reference. So, if you want to learn to crochet or simply need help with more intricate work, this book will more than meet your needs.

I bought this book to learn crochet and I would definitely not recommend it for that purpose. There are much better and more specific guides available for free online. As I was attempting to learn from scratch, I found this guide incomplete and confusing because it does not explain where EXACTLY to put your stiches. It would have been a lot better served with illustrated diagrams because the pictures are not very clear and it is meant for a low-intermeddiate crocheter who knows the basics and how to turn rows etc.It is missing a lot of cool and easier stiches that I have found online, and like I said, the picture diagrams and instructions are not very clear.I was pretty disappointed in this book but it isn't terrible:/

First off, this book is not intended as a pattern book. It doesn't teach you how to read patterns nor does it include patterns. What this does instead is show you how to do a ton of stitches whether you know the basics or are just picking up crochet for the first time.Want to learn how to crochet in the round? Fun edges for your scarves or blankets? How to change colors mid-crochet? How to weave in your ends? How to make your rows wavy or curvy? Add extra texture to your work? How about adding in beads and sequins? Or making buttons and button-holes? How to make cords? What about just wanting to know how to pick the right yarn and hooks? This book is for you!If you're brand new to crochet, the first couple chapters are all about crochet hooks sizes, yarn styles and sizes, gauge of crochet, how to hold the yarn, and the basic beginner steps to crochet such as how to start, chain stitch, slip stitch, tying off.If you already know how and just want to expand your repertoire then there are dozens upon dozens of stitches, tricks, techniques, and styles to increase your knowledge.I bought this a while ago and frequently use it as a reference guide. I made a scarf for someone once and it was going to be one color, so I used this book to make wavy rows so it looked more interesting. I was going to crochet in the round and this book helped me figure it out. Every time I've wanted to try a fun new stitch, this book was there for me to figure it out and make my work beautiful.This is an indispensable book that should be a part of any crocheters collection!

I really liked the book. It had so many stitches to learn and great depictions on how to do them. One of my favorite things about the book was that it had a big flap behind the front cover which made it very easy to hold the pages you’ve already used instead of having to fold the book in half. I got the book yesterday and am halfway through a washcloth I am making for my mom. I can’t wait to move on to more difficult stitches and hopefully sell some things I make!

If, like me, you were drawn to this book because you thought it offers mostly different types of stitches, you might be disappointed.It does offer some stitches but it’s mostly about how to crochet. I found a lot of different stitches on Pinterest but I was hoping to find an actual book that lists a lot of them because I prefer that to my kindle.I intend to keep it because it still has some good info. I’m back to looking at my kindle while I try out a new stitch in the meantime.Having said that, it is well made and helpful for novices. The pictures are great and it’s well thought out.Just because it’s not what I was looking for, doesn’t mean it’s not a decent book.

Great book for kids wanting to learn crochet. my kids loved this book and were complete beginers. I recommend this book to anyone who has wanted to start crocheting without any experience or knowledge of the subject. If my kids can learn from scratch so can you.

I apparently did not research this purchase enough prior to ordering. It is very informative regarding the instructions for many crochet stitches however, unlike many books I have purchased as tutorials, this book did not include any patterns for the application of these stitches. Had the description of the book stated ‘ stitch tutorials only’ I would not have made the purchase. With future tutorial books I will most probably purchase from a bookstore where I can look though the book and determine that the information I am looking for is actually included. Thank you for for allowing my input.

About the Author
Brian Katz is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He received his BA from Williams College in 2003 with majors in mathematics, music and chemistry, and his PhD from the University of Texas, Austin in 2011, concentrating on algebraic geometry. While at the University of Texas, Austin, Brian received the Frank Gerth III Graduate Excellence Award and the Frank Gerth III Graduate Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of Mathematics. Brian is a Project NExT Fellow, supported by Harry Lucas, Jr and the Educational Advancement Foundation. Michael Starbird is Professor of Mathematics and a University Distinguished Teaching Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. He received his BA degree from Ponoma College and his PhD in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, and at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. He served as Associate Dean in the College of Natural Sciences at the University of Texas from 1989 to 1997. Starbird's mathematical research is in the field of topology. He has served as a member-at-large of the Council of the American Mathematical Society and on the national education committees of both the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America.
