The first book i read on bpd (stop walking on eggshells) was horribly insensitive and left me feeling angry and hopeless.Luckily i read this one next,and it gave me hope that i could actually learn to cope with BPD. I have now been in DBT therapy for 11 months,and it has completely changed my life.It is just an introduction, but it offers hope for a very complicated diagnosis.Read this book, and then follow through with a good therapist, who specializes in DBT.You will be amazed at the difference it makes in every aspect of your life.
I was diagnosed with BPD in 2015. There is a lot of sketchy and triggering information about mental illness on the internet, so I try to avoid researching online. This is one of my favorite books of all time. It helped me understand borderline personality disorder and provided me with credible information to do further research, as well as many treatment options. I would recommend this for people that have BPD or know someone who does. Understanding and acceptance is very important when battling mental illness, and I feel like this could be your first step.
First off, I really appreciate the compassionate and optimistic approach the authors take to BPD. When trying to learn about a condition like this, the jaded outlook that many authors take can make it difficult to get past and absorb the information & facts presented. Also, if someone is reading for themselves and are not sufficiently grounded, negative books can be very harmful.I have a former partner whom I suspect has BPD & the first book I read on the subject was "I Hate You - Please Don't Leave Me". That book was informative, but quite harsh and pessimistic. This one had a better balance - research supported facts - but maybe a little too "soft" if that makes any sense.I also found myself wanting much more. For example, the chapter on prognosis was really good, but it pretty much only talked about recovery in the context of post-hospitalization. I would assume many people with BPD don't need hospitalization - what is the course of recovery and prognosis like for them?All in all, an excellent resource for both those suffering with BPD and those suffering alongside them...who knows, maybe if I had found it 6 months ago...
Everything is explained simply and clearly. I have a much better understanding of the disorder, which needs a better name. My daughter isn't on board yet with filling out the Symptom Monitoring Log, but she might try it later. The book lists many treatments, medications, techniques, and strategies for dealing with the symptoms.
This well- written, easy to understand book on borderline personality disorder is a must-have for someone who has been diagnosed with BPD and also for their friends and family members. The author is very nonjudgmental and at times sympathetic to those who suffer with the disorder. This attitude is such a difference from some articles that I had read on the Internet. Many therapists shun those with BPD, or just don't how to handle the disorder. This book gives so much hope for recovery with the right therapist using the right techniques.
I've only been diagnosed BPD for 15 Months, and I have struggled with dealing with myself. and I have been reading this, and It MAKES SENSE!! I highly recommend this one for the person with BPD.. and The "Stop Walking on Eggshells" for the family member who HAS a loved one with BPD- to help them help the loved one with BPD. Its a real issue in life, and can make or break relationships with people as a whole!
I am not finished with the book yet, but the writing style is extremely wordy, taking 6 or more sentences to say what could have been said in one. Just rambles on and on..like they had to come up with a certain number of words just to fill the book.
This book is not only very informative, easy to read and understand, but it is ENCOURAGING. There IS hope for those with Borderline Personality Disorder, and that is a message, as a BPD sufferer, I had not heard before. Dr. Chapman deserves high praise for this book. You MUST read; whether you have BPD or know someone who does. You can't live without this.
