About the Author

Joel Paris, MD, was born in New York City, but has spent most of his life in Canada. He obtained an MD from McGill University in 1964, where he also trained in psychiatry. Dr. Paris has been a member of the McGill psychiatry department since 1972 and served as Department Chair from 1997 to 2007. He has published 178 peer-reviewed articles, 14 books and 40 book chapters. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry.

Like the MASH TV series of old, the comedy is occasionally broken with a jarring return to reality. Stories about his work tended to the hilarious. Stories about his family, especially his Grandpa, pass along life lessons in an easy to remember format.The chapter about being shot in Arkansas brought the comedy to an end, but has a great story about his college president’s help during that crisis and his reason for helping his students.Wayne has a way of describing events that will resonate with everyone lucky enough to get this gem of a memoir. I look forward to the next installment.

Where do I start? Never knew 1 person could have so many life stories. Shark Fishing In My Underwear along with his experiences working for the National Park Service are my favorites. These are short stories that every young person growing up might envy. These short stories are well written and will have you in stitches. I'm jealous of these experiences... well, some of them. Recommend highly. I've given several away to friends.

After reading several exploits from this book I felt as though I had shared my morning cup of coffee with the author. His reminiscences have a reflective quality but are viewed with a certain serenity and amusement rather than any regret or bitterness. It was fun to share these memories with the author as though we were old friends.

I don't have time for a lot of reading but I gulped down just a few short stories in Tales of the Day and found them actually satisfying. Some are funny, some hilarious and several more than a bit scary. They truly smack of reality so I like them.

I had enjoyed reading a couple of Wayne D. McFarland stories when they were published on OZY. As soon as I started reading Tales from the Day I couldn’t put the book down. I wanted to know what would happen next and where the story was going to take me. I am looking forward to reading many more books from this author.

Absolutely enjoyable stories of this author’s true life experiences. If you grew up in the 1960’s and 1970’s, you can easily relate to SO many of these stories. Easy to read. The author has a great gift of words and descriptions. I would read a few chapters each day before work and would try to milk the book as long as I could. Each story pulled at me to read the next one. It’s the type of book that when you turn the last page and you feel a bit melancholy and sad ... that there are no more pages to read.
